Today’s health challenges — from pandemics, antimicrobial resistance and climate change to health inequities, fragile health systems and unequal access to innovation — are increasingly interconnected and cannot be addressed by countries or institutions acting alone.
The European Global Health Research Institutes Network (EGHRIN) brings together leading European research institutions working on global health to strengthen collaboration, promote equitable partnerships and ensure that research evidence informs policy and practice.
EGHRIN provides a platform for its members to exchange knowledge, develop shared positions and engage collectively with European and international policy processes. The network works to strengthen the role of global health research in Europe’s research and innovation agenda, while supporting more balanced and long-term partnerships with global partners, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
EGHRIN works at the interface of research, policy and partnership. Through its members, the network brings together expertise across infectious diseases, poverty-related and neglected diseases, health systems, pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance, climate and health, One Health, access to innovation, global health governance and the social determinants of health.

In the coming period, EGHRIN will place particular emphasis on the future of European research and innovation policy, including FP10, the future of EDCTP and other global health partnerships, as well as on strengthening the network’s presence in major academic, policy and funding spaces.
EGHRIN operates as a collaborative network of member institutions. Its work is guided by the Council of Members, supported by an Executive Committee and coordinated by the Secretariat.
The Council of Members brings together all EGHRIN member institutions and provides strategic direction for the network. It is the main forum for discussing priorities, approving common workplans and identifying opportunities for joint action.
The Executive Committee supports the implementation of the network’s strategic priorities and helps steer activities between meetings of the Council of Members.
The Secretariat coordinates the day-to-day work of the network, supports member engagement and facilitates communication, policy work and joint activities. The EGHRIN Secretariat is currently hosted by ISGlobal.
EGHRIN’s activities are developed through member-led Working Groups. These groups provide a flexible space for members to exchange intelligence, coordinate action and develop joint outputs around shared priorities.
The Policy and Advocacy Working Group follows European and international policy processes relevant to global health research. Its current focus includes the future Framework Programme, FP10, the Multiannual Financial Framework, the future of EDCTP and wider debates on the role of research and innovation in Europe’s global health agenda.
The group supports the development of shared messages, policy inputs and engagement opportunities with EU institutions and other stakeholders.
The Academy Working Group strengthens EGHRIN’s presence in academic and scientific spaces. It identifies opportunities for joint sessions, seminars, conference participation and knowledge exchange among members.
Its current priorities include increasing the visibility of EGHRIN and its members in major global health congresses and supporting spaces for dialogue on equitable research, global health curricula and the future of global health training.
The Research Funding Working Group provides a space for members to exchange information on funding opportunities and explore joint applications. It supports collaboration among members around European and international funding instruments relevant to global health research.
The group also identifies opportunities to strengthen the sustainability of collaborative global health research, including through joint proposals, strategic partnerships and new funding mechanisms.
EGHRIN’s current roadmap focuses on two strategic objectives.
First, the network aims to contribute to ongoing debates on the future of European research and innovation policy, ensuring that global health, equitable partnerships and long-term research capacity remain central to FP10 and future global health partnerships.
Second, EGHRIN aims to strengthen its visibility and collective presence in key academic and policy spaces. Through member-led activities, congress engagement, publications and events, the network seeks to position European global health research institutes as key contributors to global health equity and evidence-informed policy.
